($64) Moderately saturated red-ruby. Mellow aromas of plum, leather, smoke and earth. Creamy-sweet on the palate, with a noble leathery rusticity. This has a very firm acid spine, especially for a wine with such ripe flavors.

Mouth-watering aromas of plummy cherries, spices and mocha can be found in the nose of the 2002 Corton-Renardes. Soft, inviting, and plush, this huge wine is rich, extremely ripe, and ample. Its sweet cherry-flavored personality is immensely generous yet does not appear to have the structure for extended cellaring.

The nose here is less evidently macerated with round, supple, sweet flavors of some distinction if not great complexity yet the persistence and finishing intensity is impressive. This delivers solid if not sensational quality and at the price usually charged, represents fair value.

Consistent notes. Good mature color; ripe oaky rich nose of black fruit, smoke, leather, and spices; full bodied & masculine, especially for a Corton; good structure and acidity but not hard or austere; very good integrated tannins; very good intensity of ripe fruit; long lovely finish; an excellent Corton that has shown good development in bottle and will continue to drink well for several more years.

Styled by Vincent Girardin, these white wines display their quality in finesse, aromatic purity, and harmony between richness and vibrancy. Girardins red wines are profound and intense, balancing tannin and ripe fruit. Vincent Girardin started in 1982 with just two hectares of vineyards. After assuming responsibility for his father's vineyards and exhibiting uncanny business acumen, he turned Girardin into a flourishing Domaine (owned vineyards) and micro-negociant (purchased fruit) enterprise. The Domaine was originally based in Santenay, but in 2002 Girardin moved the operation to Meursault. This new cuverie is testimony to his dedication to skillfully melding traditional vineyard management with modern, efficient winemaking.
