($25) Good full ruby-red. Superripe aromas of raspberry syrup and flowers, with hints of exotic fruits. Sweet, lush and sappy; big and rich. Very ripe fruit syrup flavors lifted by spice and minerals. Velvety, fat, superripe zinfandel with a long, spicy finish.

Ripe, intense and concentrated, with deftly balanced fruit and light cedary oak. The zesty cranberry and wild berry flavors are restrained and harmonious, giving you more flavor and depth than you might expect from a California appellation Zin. 1,000 cases made.

The 2002 Zinfandel Old Vines is a blend of lots that did not make the grade for the single vineyard offerings. No wimpy wine at 16.4% alcohol, it exhibits deep, jammy black fruits intermixed with saddle leather, pepper, and earth. With an unctuous texture as well as a big, chewy finish, it is a robust, mouthfilling, value-priced Zinfandel to enjoy over the next 3-5 years.

Turley?s Old Vines cuv?e gets my vote as the most consistent QPR winner in California Zinfandel. Medium to deep purple red colored wine with a few thick, very slow moving, and colorless legs. A big nose of buttered raspberry, pepper, plum, some smoke, and stone. Excellent acidity and light tannins perfectly frame the wine?s considerable fruit. Quite lengthy with lots of butter, fruit, and slight oak churning through to the finish.

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
