    ($36) Good full red-ruby. Expressive red fruit and mineral aromas. Fat, thick and sweet, with red fruit, black cherry, licorice and spice flavors. Very tactile, approachable zinfandel, finishing with sweet tannins and sneaky length.

    Beautifully crafted, dark, rich and concentrated, with a zesty, vibrant core of spicy wild berry and blackberry fruit, with touches of pepper and herb, and finishing with a sturdy core of tannins.

    Several hundred cases were produced of the 2002 Zinfandel Estate (16.4% alcohol). Made from cuttings taken from the Hayne Vineyard, it represents the youngest vines of the Turley single vineyard offerings. It comes from the vineyard adjacent to the winery, and what will ultimately be a new AVA (Calistoga) when approved by the government. This full-bodied offering reveals notes of kirsch liqueur, melted licorice, black raspberries, and notions of pepper, beet roots, and underbrush. Ripe and fleshy, with admirable fruit purity, this hedonistic turn-on should be enjoyed over the next 5-6 years.

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.
