($32; 16.7% alcohol, from vines planted in 1896) Bright ruby-red. Pungent blackberry aroma complicated by espresso and exotic notes of apricot and peach; can't quite hide its alcohol. Chewy, thick and sweet but a bit musclebound, with firm acidity framing the chewy cherry and raspberry flavors. This will need a couple years of bottle aging. May merit a higher score if it can absorb some of its alcohol before it loses its fruit.

A big, ripe, effusively fruity style, with intense dusty wild berry, blackberry and dried currant flavors that firm up on the midpalate and show a tight core of cedary oak, finishing with ripe fruit, a touch of tar and herbal notes. 400 cases made.

Few other producers can equal what Larry Turley accomplishes with Contra Costa Zinfandel from the Duarte Vineyard. From ungrafted, ancient vines planted in pure sand (Turley says it looks like a beach), there are 400 cases of the powerhouse 2002 Zinfandel Duarte Vineyard (400 cases; 16.7% alcohol). Full-bodied and dense, with no hotness, but copious quantities of raspberries, blackberries, balsam wood, pepper, and Provencal herbs, this is a rich, layered, hedonistic turn-on. It can be enjoyed over the next 5-6 years.

Making "big reds" has been Larry Turley's passion since giving up his co-ownership of Frog's Leap Winery in 1993. Turley Wine Cellars is run by Larry and his wife Suzanne. Larry's sister, winemaker Helen Turley, made the wines here until 1995. Now the honor goes to Ehren Jordan, who also makes wines for Neyers. With a focus on producing old-vine Zinfandel and Petite Sirah, Turley sources fruit from vineyards some of which date back to the late 1800s and early 1900s. Both the Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs have a dark, saturated, inky color, with intense fruit flavors that make unforgettable statements about the power and complexity these varieties may attain.
