Another tremendous effort from this producer, supple and harmonious, with rich, fleshy blackberry, black cherry, plum and currant fruit that's tight and concentrated. A hint of mocha, herb and cedar add a wonderful dimension and the structure is excellent, with lively acidity and firm tannins. 2,500 cases made.

Extremely deep crimson. Very exciting, complex notes on the nose. Lively as well as opulent. Both rich and refreshing. Lots of energy. Pretty promising! Masses of tannin but it?s ripe tannin. Good and vital. Long. Very different from the early vintages in which the terroir shines through. Very youthful!

Possibly the superstar of the Rutherford appellation, Staglin's brilliant 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon boasts a deep ruby/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of kirsch liqueur, licorice, subtle smoke, roasted herbs and that red, loamy soil note that is part of the so-called 'Rutherford dustƒ?_ terroir characteristic. Round, rich and opulent with beautiful purity, but still some light tannins in the background, this wine has absorbed all of its new oak and is currently a gorgeous example of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon that should drink well for another two decades.

Good color with a forward nose of cherry, oak, and |Rutherford Dust|. Quite sweet in the mouth with smooth oak that lasts. Sufficient acidity. Excessive tannins that have plagued this wine in years past have been tamed in the 2002 vintage.

Medium weight; cherry, cedar/spice and a pleasant loam like note (|Rutherford dust| after a light rain?); long and active finish. Drinking really well now.

Situated at the base of the Mayacamas Range on the Rutherford Bench, this sixty-one acre property has ideal soils, microclimate and location. The estate's potential was recognized by some of the first Napa Valley settlers and was planted to vineyards in the mid 1860's. Today the certified organic estate is home to the Staglins, fifty-one acres of vines, an underground winery, the historic homestead and a solar array.

Staglin is undoubtedly within the top tier of California Cabernet producers. In addition to the flagship Staglin Family Vineyard label, they also produce a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay under the Salus label.
