  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

($32-$44) Deep ruby-red. Highly nuanced nose combines black raspberry, hot stones, minerals, smoke, graphite, tobacco and game. Juicy and suave on the palate, with notes of black raspberry, tobacco, smoke and game. Quite suave for the vintage, finishing with fine-grained tannins and lingering sweetness. Extremely user-friendly Graves , but with the balance to age.

Bright crimson. Very gorgeous and attractive in an Smith Haut Lafitte sort of way. Luscious. And in balance. Very neat.ÿ

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 90

Superpretty red with licorice, plums and Indian spices that follow through to a full-bodied palate, with silky tannins and a long, long finish. Very pretty indeed. All in finesse. 8,330 cases made.

This successful wine exhibits notes of ripe black currants and smoked herbs. With deep, concentrated, attractive flavors, medium body, sweet tannin, and decent acidity, this is an impressive, classic Graves that should drink well young yet age nicely for up to two decades. It is more structured and linear than the plump 2003, but both are top-notch efforts.

  • Chateau Smith-Haut-Lafitte is located in the Pessac-Leognan appellation and is classified as a Graves Classified Growth. The chateau produces about 16,000 cases per year, which includes both their red and white versions and their second label, Les Hauts de Smith. The average 30-year-old vines represent red varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc; and whites Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, and Semillon. The vineyards are situated on gravel, which gives its vines two great advantages: superb natural drainage, and pebbles that reflect the sun's rays, helping to ripen the fruit. The red wine is concentrated and powerful, with a bouquet of ripe red berry fruit. It may also have overtones of licorice, violet, and flint. The white wine is characterized by citrus, apple, peach and brioche with strong acidity. It is very long and clean on the palate.
