($125; 80% from To Kalon fruit) Full medium ruby. Vibrant, highly aromatic nose combines blackberry, violet and licorice. Juicy, lively and light on its feet, with cool, lifted flavors of blackberry, violet, mint and exotic spices. Today, this gives virtually no hint of dehydrated fruit. Offers terrific verve for the vintage, but the substantial ripe tannins call for at least five or six years of additional cellaring.

Looks very mature. Smells very evolved with some lively complexity and relatively gentle composition. Some fine tannins and dustiness well in retreat. Very ripe fruit but - just - enough acidity. Not the perfect follow through; it's a little lacking juice on the finish. The fruit fell away in the glass.Blind guess: mountain. Revealed location: valley.

Not up to the usual standards for this wine, and it has nothing to do with the new ownership. Tastes better than it smells, with rich, creamy blackberry, wild berry, anise and a dusty sage and cedar edge on the finish.

The stylish, elegant 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve (8,300 cases of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec) is not as dense as either the M-Bar or Vine Hill Ranch cuvee, but it offers a beautiful marriage of power and elegance. Cedar wood, creme de cassis, spice box, and dried herb aromas soar from the glass of this medium-bodied, beautifully balanced, elegant Private Reserve, which is somewhat reminiscent of Mondavi's 1978. It's all about harmony, balance, and finesse in 2002.

92% CS, 7% Merlot, 6% CF. Great color. Soft on palate, lots of fruit, round. Medium to long pleasant finish.

Dark red. Sumo oath tannins. Coming together beautifully. Red fruits, cedar wood, mild incense, and herbs are mixed together to offer a mid-weight, smooth wine. Expected more from the reserve bottling. Disappoints when compared to the less expensive Napa or Oakville bottles. Bad QPR

Robert Mondavi Winery was founded in 1966 and for decades has produced quality California wines that represent New World innovation on a global scale. The winery is located in Oakville, at the center of Napa Valley. The Mondavi family is well known for its dedication to research and experimentation in winemaking, as well as for helping establish the modern-day wine business in the post-Prohibition era. Some of Mondavi's innovations include the introduction of cold fermentation in stainless steel tanks and the use of French oak barrels in the late 1960s. Furthermore, Mondavi's technological innovations to improve the quality of wine and its focus on natural farming techniques have made a fundamental impact on the industry as a whole. For over 20 years Mondavi has been a leader in environmental responsibility, promoting sustainable farming and conservation.

The Robert Mondavi Winery produces wine in four categories: Napa Valley Wines, District Wines, Reserve Wines, and Limited Availability Wines. The Napa Valley wines are made from fruit blended across the region, whereas the District wines reflect the terroir of a particular appellation within the Valley. The Reserve wines are made from selected vineyard fruit that benefits from cellar aging. The Limited Availability Wines are unique varietal expressions (or blends) whose fruit is sourced from venerable vineyards throughout the Napa Valley and Carneros.
