($30-$40) Red-ruby. Cool aromas of blackcurrant, espresso and menthol. Then sweet and pliant in the mouth, with concentrated, very pure currant, chocolate and mint flavors. Wonderfully smooth for the vintage. Broadens out impressively on the back end, finishing with firm, ripe tannins. St. Julien

A solid wine with berry, currant and mineral character. Full-bodied, with silky tannins and a long finish. Racy. Alfred Tesseron is making excellent wine nearly every year now. One of the few 2002s better than 2001.

Quite dark crimson. Rather thick and soupy on the nose. With some very slight greenness. Harsh acidity and rugged tannins. Still pretty unsettled. Drying tannins on the finish.

This wine has seemingly gone to sleep and is in a dormant, ungracious stage, exhibiting notes of green tea leaves intermixed with red and black currants in its dusty nose. A medium-bodied wine with moderately high tannin and a certain austerity, it seems to be a much less impressive effort than I thought from barrel or is it just impossibly closed? There is still substantial size and tannic clout to the wine, but the fruit seems to have gone into hiding.

Another '02 that is just beginning to turn the corner and show well. Right now this is reminding me a lot of 1998 Sociando Mallet when that wine was the same age (7 yrs old). This wine is a brooding one, with just a whiff of vanilla, cassis extract, black tea, a hint of red fruit to keep it lively, and good acidity. The way the wine has just soaked up its oak is probably a good indication of its depth. It's still too early to drink, but it has begun to be |drink-able.|

Disappointing. Highly rated wine, but tasted thin and tannic. Maybe too young, but not so much there.

Mature, ready to drink but no rush to drink. Is a textbook of a classic Bordeaux, with such aromas of cedar, black fruits, forest floor. Overwhelming tannins, red ruby color, medium acidity, easy to enjoy and drink. More elegance and finesse than power and structure of the big vintages as the 2005. Nice drinking and somehow good value considering that came from an 'off year'. A well introduction to this well famed chateau.

Surprise of the night (on the upside!). Cassis and blueberries, earthy component. A little leaner than the 2001, showing a little more oak backbone in a positive manner. Tannins are silky. A sleeper waking up from a good dream. Go for it.

One of eighteen Fifth Growth estates, Chateau Pontet-Canet is located in the northern end of the Pauillac appellation, and has one of the largest production volumes in the region. The vineyards date to the early 18th century, and are planted on extremely gravelly, well-draining soil, typical of the best vineyards in Bordeaux. Plantings are predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. Chateau Pontet-Canet wines are very concentrated, yet elegant, and have tremendous aging potential. The estate produces a second wine, Les Hauts de Pontet, as well as an additional red blend called Benjamin de Pontet.
