  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($180) Deep red-ruby. Primal aromas of blackberry skin, espresso, violet, licorice and dark chocolate. Sweet, scented and highly concentrated, with an exotic flavor of fruity dark chocolate. More aromatic and more sharply delineated than the Clos de la Roche. Finishes with firm but harmonious tannins and superb subtle persistence.
    Author: Stephen Tanzer
    Issue: March/April 2005
  • Wine Advocate | Rating: 97

The highly expressive aromas of the 2002 Clos St.-Denis display blackberries, spices, and cinnamon. This huge, sensual, sweet, soft wine has exceptional depth, purity, and concentration. It is precise, powerful, and noble.

  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

This is even richer and sappier than the Clos de la Roche but it's not nearly as powerful or structured. Still, the depth, richness and complexity are impressive in their own right and this too offers superb length if not the sheer classiness of its stable mate.
    Issue: 1st Quarter, 2004

  • Michael Magnien wines offer the Burgundy enthusiast a great opportunity to experience the refined extraction and elegant concentration of Pinot Noir. Michel comes from a long line of Burgundy artisans and owns 27 acres of grand cru, premier cru and village vineyards. He sold off the majority of his crop until 1992, when he started bottling most of the harvest. In 1994, at the urging of his son Frederic, he decided to bottle the whole harvest and thus it remains to this day. He is a leader in terroir-driven Pinot and deals in purity. His wines are sleek yet commanding, and flood the senses with waves of berry and cherry in a sea of perfumed and exotic spices.
