($25) Good ruby-red. Exotic raspberry, smoked meat, gunflint, pepper and minerals on the nose; I would have picked this as Saint-Joseph. Juicy, spicy and austere, with firm acidity. A distinctly clenched wine that doesn't quite del iver the complexity on the palate that the nose promises. Still quite tight and ungiving, finishing with firm-edged acids and tannins.

Meaty, gamy and ripe red fruit aromas are accented by a touch of beef and peppery spice. This lean, structured wine could use a little more richness and depth at midpalate. Finishes with firm tannins.

The dark ruby-colored 2002 Syrah Estate exhibits a touch of bacon fat/lard along with cherries, currants, and plums in its simple, pleasant nose. A soft attack with superficial depth fades quickly in the mouth. It is a pleasant red to drink over the next several years.

Good full red, very fruit forward, almost Aussie style; excellent value at this price point

In 1996 Melville Vineyards made the bold move from Knights Valley to the Santa Rita Hills appellation, where Ron Melville and his sons set up the estate property with a focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Santa Rita microclimate, with its coastal winds and fog, provided the Melvilles the perfect locale for their 139 planted acres of Pinot, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Viognier. Winemaker Greg Brewer, of Brewer-Clifton fame, oversees production at Melville.
