($130) Medium red. Great nose combines raspberry, minerals, rose petal, peony and white pepper. Like an essence of Chambolle in the mouth, offering an uncanny combination of sweetness and thrust. Wonderfully flowery, delineated and gripping. Explosive finishing flavors convey a powerful impression of soil. All of Roumier's Bonnes-Mares is in Chambolle, but the vines are planted about 50/50 on white and red soil. A complete Burgundy , and a no-brainer. One of my early candidates for wine of the vintage.

A beautiful red, dense and broad, with concentrated black cherry, plum and mineral flavors. Shows an old-vine richness and is backed by a firm structure, with ripe, fine-grained tannins. Fine length.

Superb scents of spicy candied cherries, perfume, roses, blueberries, and mint can be discerned in the aromatic profile of the sensual 2002 Bonnes Mares. A wine of magnificent breadth, power, focus, and purity of flavors, it gracefully dances across the palate releasing a myriad of super-ripe red fruits. Exceptionally well-balanced, its satin-textured, seamless personality lingers for 40 seconds in the finish, exhibiting additional waves of sweet red cherries. This tour de force should be drunk between 2007 and 2017.

  • Georges Roumier married his way into some of the best vineyard holdings in the Cote d'Or, back in 1924. He gained a wife from Chambolle and the vineyards as part of the dowry. Grand Cru blocks in Bonnes-Mares, Clos de Vougeot, Musigny, and Corton Charlemagne produce highly sought-after wines year after year. Christophe Roumier, Georges' son, has run the domaine since 1982, when he took over management of his family's 14.2 hectares of vines. He is regarded as one of the finest winemakers in the Cote de Nuit, one who strives to create authentic representations of each of his diverse plots.
