From an old head-pruned vineyard, the dense purple-colored 2002 Zinfandel Butala Vineyard reveals a leathery, spicy, peppery bouquet with black cherry and licorice-dominated fruit. Rich and ripe, with a sweet mid-palate, it should merit an outstanding rating if everything comes together.

Serves up a complex array of ripe plum, blackberry and spicy cedary oak, giving it a roasted, smoky edge. Concentrated, with fine balance and ripe, integrated tannins.

After ten months in French oak, this Zinfandel (from 35 year old vines) was bottled unfiltered. The Butala has a translucent red color with purple highlights and thin, very slightly pigmented legs. A funky nose of blackberry, raspberry, and leather. The funkiness is off putting. Lots of raspberry in the mouth with a bit of spice and pepper on the finish. An attractive velvety mouthfeel.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
