A pure display of ripe, racy wild berry, black cherry and raspberry fruit that at times veers into Zinfandel berry territory. Intense and tannic, it's not what I've come to expect from this producer. Nonetheless, it's tasty and full of vivid flavors. 265 cases made.

This gorgeous Cabernet Sauvignon from a vineyard above Lake Hennessey exhibits scents of creme de cassis, spring flowers, ink, graphite, plums and licorice. The superb aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, opulent wine with no hard edges. Still in mid-adolescence, this brilliant 2002 is an authoritative example of this great vintage for Napa Valley Cabernet. It should hit its peak in 3-5 years and last for 20-25 years thereafter.

Aromas of vanilla roasted coffee beans and toasted oak are followed by dark cherry and cassis on the palate that end in a nice medium length finish. This needs lots of air and should continue to evolve.

Brothers David and Bob Long began planting their Pritchard Hill Estate property in 1978 and made their Cabernet Sauvignon debut eighteen years later with the spectacular 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon and Elevation 1147. Production of the flagship reds remains small. They produce a Super Tuscan blend called Meritaggiom as well as Sangiovese, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Bob Egelhoff has been winemaker for two decades.
