A seductive style, with layers of rich, ripe currant, blackberry and creamy mocha-chocolate oak. Deeply concentrated and deftly balanced, this keeps the focus on the fruit and wood, ending with intense, chewy tannins. Fans of up-front, opulent young Cabernets are in for a treat. A winner from this rising star. 989 cases made.

A sleeper of the vintage, this 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Moose Valley Vineyard appears to have reached full maturity. It offers an attractive, jammy nose of red and black currants, damp earth, roasted espresso, cedar and spice box. Medium to full-bodied, lush and seductive with low acidity, ripe tannin and a fleshy, round, opulent mouthfeel, it will offer plenty of pleasure for 6-7 more years.

A big rather funky but very aromatic nose of buttery plum, cherry and oak. While the nose is extremely fine, in the mouth the wine disappoints. It lacks fruit concentration (not something that can be said very often regarding top flight Napa Valley 2002 Cabernets) yet it is quite smooth with moderate tannins and integrated acids. The 2002 Cabernet is much more subdued at the present time than expected. 100% Cabernet aged entirely in French oak.

Great wine! Bold fruit, dark and delicious. Like drinking a large glass of chocolate covered cherries. Decanted for 1 hour. Would have loved to taste the differences over time but our group drank the magnum like it was the last wine in the world. I should have brought more!

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
