($70-$100) Good red-ruby. Deep, aromatic, highly complex nose combines raspberry, espresso, tree bark, leather, graphite, cedar, coconut and exotic woodsmoke. Lush, sweet and pure, with very ripe flavors of currant, dark chocolate and graphite, nicely framed by perfectly integrated acidity. Finishes broad and suave; the tannins here make those of the young 2004 seem a bit tough by comparison. Superb, complete wine.

Gorgeous aromas of currants and berries with hints of licorice. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a pretty finish. Silky. This is extremely good for the vintage. The team of Cos worked hard on their 2002 and it shows.

One of the candidates for wine of the vintage, this beauty has a dense purple color to the rim and a classic, noble nose of graphite intermixed with black currant, spice box, licorice, and red and black fruits. Medium to full-bodied with exceptional precision and definition, this beautifully textured wine stands out as one of the most successful wines of this irregular vintage. A brilliant effort, it should be at its best between 2008 and 2020.

This is coming along very well, giving mature, savoury notes which seems to bare little resemblance to the mega fruity and 15% alcohol 2009, for example. The nose has a lovely cedar, liquorice and sandalwood bouquet with firm blackcurrant fruits in support, and firm but fair tannins on the palate with good length. Its weakness is a lightness of body in the mid-palate; so, there is some gravitas missing, but it is nonetheless classic, and very enjoyable for a lighter style. (RH)

Bought on release. Beautiful evocative nose on opening, deeply colored, heavy in the glass. A lush mouthfeel is driven more by the density and glycerin of the wine, as the fruit is pretty, if just a touch lean (especially when compared to the fruit driven vintages in 2003, 2005, 2009), which gives the wine a nice tension, and interesting complexity from leather, spice and minerality. Very good length. Some excellent values in 2002, keep them around!

The nose explodes from the decanter with floral notes, cassis, stone and black fruit. The color is garnet with hints of a more mature rust. Pallate was very tight upon first tasting, but after an hour, she softened up and revealed her true lush personality. It was clear that it was still early in the bottle cycle of this wine and I look forward to tasting the other bottles in the years to come.

Classified as a Second Growth Bordeaux estate, Chateau Cos d'Estournel is without doubt, one of the top producers in the St. Estephe appellation, producing complex and intense, full-bodied wines. The chateau is often referred to as "super second," meaning that it produces wines at a quality nearing that of the First Growth houses. Cos d'Estournel wines contain a large amount of Merlot (40%), one of the highest percentages in the region, in fact; this gives the wines their wonderful fleshy, chewy texture. The chateau itself is a very unusual pagoda style building which was built by the 19th century owner Louis-Gaspard d'Estournel. The building is featured on the bottle label, making it easy to spot in the Bordeaux section. The estate also produces a second wine called Les Pagodes de Cos.
