(just assembled in cuve and not yet fined) Tangy aromas of orange peel, wet stone and spices. Wonderfully intense and concentrated wine, with a penetrating flavor of crushed stones and minerals. Large-scaled, broad and solid, with great palate coverage and grand cru class. This has a completely different texture from the 2002s that preceded it in my tasting. Finishes with outstanding dusty minerality and great length.

Revealing aromas reminiscent of exotic spices awash in stone liqueur, the 2002 Meursault Perrieres is a wine of huge depth, concentration, and complexity. Medium-bodied, pure, and layered, it offers gravel, earth, pear, and nutmeg throughout its character as well as in its lengthy oak-tinged finish.

The now fully mature nose is elegance personified with honeysuckle, green apple, spice, dried floral and limestone aromas. There is impressive precision to the crisp medium full flavors that pack absolutely superb mid-palate punch, the intensity of which continues into the extended palate staining finish. The flavors are quite powerful, firm and crystalline, underscored by pronounced and ripe acidity buffered by a lovely touch of sweet and sappy extract. Simply beautiful juice that is flat out amazingly complex.

  • Dominique Lafon has an unwavering loyalty to traditional winemaking, but the flexibility to know when and where progressive techniques are warranted. The vineyards are biodynamic, and wines are barrel fermented, and bottled nearly two years after harvest. Comtes Lafon has one of the deepest, coldest cellars in Burgundy and this has a most positive effect upon the stellar quality of the wines, as it allows for very lengthy, complete fermentations and aging. The result is wines that are made to last and enjoy over decades. As Clive Coates so succinctly states, "[this is] one of the few indisputably three-star white wine estates in Burgundy." Lafon specializes in Premier Cru Meursault and Volnay Pinot Noir.
