  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89

A real basket of fruits on the nose: fresh pear, Granny Smith apple, orange, grapefruit. Then juicy and leanish in the mouth, tightly wound and in a drier style than the foregoing samples. Not yet showing a lot of personality, but finishes with good subtle length.

The 2002 Meursault Goutte d'Or has a nose composed of white pepper, ginger, poached pears, and assorted spices. Medium-bodied, powerful, muscular, and broad, this is an intense, satiny-textured wine packed with poached pears, yellow plums, nutmeg, and buttered toast. Its extended finish reveals additional layers of poached, spiced pears. Drink it over the next 7 years.

This is bigger and richer than the Clos de la Barre but surprisingly, not any finer with an opulent, indeed lush and silky attack and notes of ripe peach and anise on the nose. This is a big and powerful wine with plenty of finishing muscle and the sappy finish completely stains and coats the mouth.

  • Dominique Lafon has an unwavering loyalty to traditional winemaking, but the flexibility to know when and where progressive techniques are warranted. The vineyards are biodynamic, and wines are barrel fermented, and bottled nearly two years after harvest. Comtes Lafon has one of the deepest, coldest cellars in Burgundy and this has a most positive effect upon the stellar quality of the wines, as it allows for very lengthy, complete fermentations and aging. The result is wines that are made to last and enjoy over decades. As Clive Coates so succinctly states, "[this is] one of the few indisputably three-star white wine estates in Burgundy." Lafon specializes in Premier Cru Meursault and Volnay Pinot Noir.
