  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89

Subdued but tangy aromas of apricot and orange. Less expressive today than the regular village cuvee -perhaps more stunted from the recent bottling-but also a bit livelier in the mouth. A more shapely wine, and longer on the aftertaste.

The 2002 Meursault Desiree is a hugely spicy, floral wine. Rich, satiny-textured, and medium-bodied, it is juicy, packed with pears as well as ginger and possesses a long, seamless finish.

A touch of reduction is still showing on the nose though Lafon confirmed that the malo is completely finished. However, the funk is not enough to hide the otherwise spicy and seductive aromas followed by rich, sweet, concentrated and full flavors and while this is pretty, there isn't quite the intensity of the straight villages. The finish also comes up a bit on the short side at the moment though I suspect this will round out with a few years in the bottle.

  • Dominique Lafon has an unwavering loyalty to traditional winemaking, but the flexibility to know when and where progressive techniques are warranted. The vineyards are biodynamic, and wines are barrel fermented, and bottled nearly two years after harvest. Comtes Lafon has one of the deepest, coldest cellars in Burgundy and this has a most positive effect upon the stellar quality of the wines, as it allows for very lengthy, complete fermentations and aging. The result is wines that are made to last and enjoy over decades. As Clive Coates so succinctly states, "[this is] one of the few indisputably three-star white wine estates in Burgundy." Lafon specializes in Premier Cru Meursault and Volnay Pinot Noir.
