Intense and extracted, with chewy red currant, red licorice and red plum fruit that's clean and defined. Finishes with dry, earthy, leathery, chalky tannins.

The 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve performed significantly better than it did seven years ago. Spicy oak and new saddle leather characteristics lead to dusty, loamy soil, cherry and cassis notes. The wine reveals terrific balance as well as a hint of French oak (BV is no longer using American oak as it did in the 1970's, 1960's and 1950's). This is intense, with some minerality as well as sweet tannins and abundant fruit, glycerin and richness. I was stunned by how well this cuvee is currently showing. It is capable of lasting another two decades. My initial assessment of this wine was unquestionably incorrect.

Deeply hued with thin slightly colored legs. Simple cherry, cassis, and strong but deftly rendered oak aromas. Moderately tannic with good levels of acidity and a short finish. This wine is subdued in all facets and is a considerable surprise in Napa Valley?s ostentatious and forward 2002 vintage. Distinctly Rutherford in origin but it is disappointing given this wine?s laudable history.

This was a beautiful wine. Dark, elegant, rich bordeaux style. Notes of pencil shavings, earth, and graphite. Medium/long finish but I think it's got a long more time before it's at peak. Glorious wine!

In 1900, when Georges de Latour's wife, Fernande, first laid eyes on the land that would become their original Rutherford vineyard, she named it "beau lieu," or "beautiful place." Shortly thereafter, de Latour sold his thriving cream of tartar business, bought the four-acre ranch and founded Beaulieu Vineyard with the vision of making Napa Valley wines that would rival those of his native France.Today the winery continues to turn to innovative practices to craft wines in a bold, classic style. They have become a leader in clonal research, and the BV Clone Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon wines are highly acclaimed. Most recently a new state-of-the-art winery was completed within one of the original buildings. The Georges de Latour Private Reserve Winery utilizes the latest technology in combination with time-honored traditions for the production of this exceptional, wine-the longtime benchmark of Rutherford Cabernet.
