($85; cabernet sauvignon with 14% each merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot) Good ruby-red. Fresh, expressive aromas of currant, licorice, mocha and charred oak. Fat, sweet, layered and rich, with supple flavors of dark raspberry and brown spices. Not a particularly fruity style, but finishes ripe and quite persistent. This is all from estate fruit; in fact, Araujo continues to sell off lesser stuff that's not good enough for this second wine.

Everything is about quality, as evidenced by Araujo's second wine, the 2002 Altagracia. A selection of 650 cases that is about two-thirds Cabernet Sauvignon and equal parts (about 14% each) Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, this is one heck of a second wine. A beautifully fragrant nose of cedar wood, flowers, pepper, and spice box along with the telltale red and black fruit soars from the glass. On a much quicker evolutionary track than the Eisele Estate Cabernet, it is supple-textured as well as loaded with fruit and complexity. Already accessible, it possesses the balance and depth to evolve for 10-12 years. A sleeper selection, it is by no means a second wine in the pejorative sense of the word.

  • The mission statement reads, in part, "To produce organically grown fruit and with this fruit make a singular wine of the highest caliber and distinction." By all accounts, Bart and Daphne Araujo are succeeding magnificently. The flagship wine, the Cabernet Sauvignon from their own Eisele Vineyards, is hailed by critics and desired by consumers in every vintage. Though first planted to Zinfandel and Riesling in the 1880s, the Eisele Vineyard has been the home of world class Cabernet since 1964. The low-yielding vines lie on property just east of Calistoga, where the vines are protected by the Palisades Mountains and cooled by the breeze from the Chalk Hill Gap. The harvested fruit is rich and concentrated, lending intense character to the finished wine. Under the direction of winemaker Francoise Peschon, Araujo produces four wines each year: the Cabernet Sauvignon Eisele Vineyard; Altagracia, a second estate Cabernet; Syrah Eisele Vineyard; and Sauvignon Blanc Eisele Vineyard. In some vintages, a Viognier may also be produced.
