($115) Full ruby-red. Aromas of currant, plum, chocolate, black cherry, mint, mocha, licorice and herbs. Lush, rich and sweet, with a mouth-caressing texture but also noteworthy energy. Quite full and suave. The dusty, fine tannins arrive late, allowing the currant and lightly herbal flavors to open nicely on the back. Rather sophisticated cabernet, with plenty of structure for aging.

A gorgeous effort from proprietors Chuck and Anne McMinn, this grand cru vineyard situated north of St. Helena, in the sloping foothills of the Mayacamas Mountains has turned out a beautiful, complex, elegant, Chateau Margaux-like Cabernet Sauvignon. This youthful wine offers a dense ruby/purple color, notes of acacia flowers, blueberry and black currant fruit, full body and stunning finesse, charm, purity and equilibrium. The finish is long, fresh, lively and promising. Although approachable now, it will not hit its peak for another 5-6 years, and should last for 20-25 years thereafter.

Dark, ripe, intense and concentrated, with a raw, youthful edge to the tannins, alcohol and acidity, but there's a load of ripe fruit flavors, too, with dense blackberry, currant and wild berry flavors that are complex and long on the finish. Packs a firm load of tannins, too. 312 cases made.

What to do when you find the land you purchased for retirement is, in fact, perfectly suited to growing Cabernet Napa? Plant a vineyard and start a new career. Teresa Norton and Tom Paine did just that in 1989, planting 3 acres under the direction of legendary vineyard manager David Abreu. In 1992 the first vintage was released - 250 cases of estate Cabernet. Philippe Melka became winemaker in 1999, and soon after Teresa and Tom decided to really retire. They sold Vineyard 29 to Churck and Anne McMinn. A new winery was built, caves were dug, and production increased with the purchase of a second vineyard, Aida, planted to Cabernet, Zinfandel, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. From these two vineyards, the estate wines are produced: Vineyard 29 Cabernet Sauvignon, Vineyard 29 Sauvignon Blanc, Aida Red Wine, and Aida Zinfandel.
