Good deep red. Very ripe aromas of cherry liqueur, mocha, chocolate and camphor. Sweet, lush, rich and chocolatey, but with powerful structure. Classic traditional Barolo, finishing with huge tannins that coat the front teeth.

The 2001 Barolo Rocche is a huge wine. The baby fat has dropped off, while the aromatics are just starting to show signs of early tertiary complexity. There is more than enough fruit and sheer density to allow the 2001 to drink well for another 10-15 years. If opened today the wine needs time. Crushed flowers, autumn leaves, spices and tobacco lead to more exotic notes of orange peel, rose petals and pomegranate. There is no question the Rocche is Vietti's grandest of grand crus. This is a dazzling showing.

This is very flamboyant on the palate with wild fruit and sweet tobacco aromas. Full-bodied, with chewy yet refined tannins and a long, fruity finish. This is very well-structured and reserved and there's loads going on here.

  • Decades of experience as vineyard tenders in Barolo provided the Vietti family with priceless information when they decided to go into the winemaking business in the early 1900s. The firm recently acquired an additional 7 hectares of vineyards, bringing their holdings to a total of 31. Their link to the land has been the catalyst for their vineyard-designate bottlings, which showcase Barolo's diverse terroir. The wines' finesse belies their extraordinary depth and complexity; Vietti firmly adheres to the classic style that makes the wines of Piedmont such a revelation to those patient enough to cellar them.
