  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 86

($100) Saturated ruby-red. Cassis, mocha, earth and smoky oak on the nose. Moderately sweet, pliant flavors of dark berries, plum, sassafras and chocolate. Finishes with fairly sweet but slightly dry tannins and late notes of chocolate and dill. Not especially complex but not bad.

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 86

Elegant and refined, with subtle currant, fresh earth, herb, and sage flavors and tight, earthy tannins, though it leaves you hoping for more depth and complexity.

In addition to the earthy, almost fresh cow dung smell, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon SLV possesses attractive black raspberry, plum, and cherry notes. Medium-bodied with a silky texture, good flesh, fine balance, and a pleasant finish, it may be more interesting in another 2-3 years. It should last for 10-15.

Color: Claret with red edges Nose: Muted nose at first. Took about 2 hours or so to finally open up fully. Cassis, black currants, cherry, lead pencil, less herbal than a Cask 23 from the same vintage consumed in the same tasting. Palate: Medium fruit: cherry and currants, cassis, big tannins lead to a rougher than expected finish, but not terrible. Acidity intact. Drink now, will not get better with age.

Stag's Leap Wine Cellars is one of Napa Valley's most established and respected producers. The winery was founded by Warren Winiarski and his family in 1970 and it is best known for estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignons - CASK 23, S.L.V., and FAY. Over the years, the wines have become some of the most highly regarded and collected wines worldwide. They are fashioned to express classic elegance, structure, and ageability, and to reflect the place in which they are grown.
