Deep medium ruby. Perfumed aromas of currant, graphite, licorice, tobacco, smoke and truffle, with a subtle whiff of currant leaf. Sweet, lush, dense and chocolatey, with hints of game and truffle and solid underlying structure. Intensely flavored cabernet, rather atypically Bordeaux-like for a wine from this producer. Finishes with tongue-dusting tannins.

Deliciously smooth, rich and polished, with a complex array of currant, blackberry, melted chocolate and mocha flavors, offering a wealth of concentrated flavors and a long, intense, yet graceful and harmonious finish that lingers, echoing coffee and smoky oak. 481 cases made.

From the cool climate of Carneros, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Hyde Vineyard exhibits complex notes of smoke, camphor, barbecue spices, black currants and sweet cherries. Medium to full-bodied and elegant, it is the most feminine and Bordeaux-like of this impressive quartet. It needs another 2-3 years to reach full maturity where it should remain for 20-25 years.

Such a big difference from the last bottle. This played out nicely with nice aromas up front and working it's way deeper and more complex over the next 3 hours. Has plenty of time left. Color: Very slight bricking to light crimson edges, deep core still. Nose: Full blackberry, licorice, some pencil lead and cherry, later this leads to cedar, and some subtle sweet oak and caramel/vanil notes. A touch of spice adds further complexity. Palate: The palate experience is exceptional, black cherry, black currant, this is big and complex revealing layers of further fruit, spice and licorice. Tannins don't overwhelm, but actually seem to crown the flavors to the palate. The finish caresses the palate with length that is full and precise. One of the better 2001s I have had recently. Up until this year I felt the 01s were in a sleepy phase, taking a long time to open, if at all. Has a good 4-6 years probably in this mode until more maturity sets in.

When Paul Hobbs founded his eponymous winery in 1991, he set out to produce small lot, hand-crafted, vineyard designate wines. He began with just three - one Chardonnay, one Pinot Noir and one Cabernet Sauvignon.

Over the years, the small family of wines has grown to over a dozen as numerous new and historic vineyards have captured Hobbs' attention since that first vintage. The current wines are the result of years of perseverance, patience and experimentation in Hobbs' continuing adventure with wine. It is his great hope that the fruit-driven, complex wines he makes with his dedicated team will continue to appeal to many people around the globe.
