  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 87

($43) Bright ruby-red. Briary dark berries, licorice, chocolate and spicy oak on the nose. Sweet, spicy flavors of rather zin-like dark berries, mocha and cola. On the oaky side and a bit aggressive, but offers good concentration and finishes with ripe tannins and a juicy quality.

This is a rich, polished, harmonious style that's a successful blend of Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. It exhibits pretty smoky, toasty oak and layers of currant, sage, herb flavors that fill in lots of flavor gaps. Mouthcoating, with a long, persistent finish that echoes currant, oak and cedary notes.

  • Co-founded in 1976 by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn, Duckhorn Wine Company includes Duckhorn Vineyards, Paraduxx, and Goldeneye Winery. Their Duckhorn Vineyards estate is renowned for its Bordeaux varietal wines and since 1982 has also produced a Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc. Duckhorn commits itself to source the finest fruit in the Napa Valley and subsequently has purchased several properties to join the estate vineyard program. Currently the winery owns six estate vineyards along the slopes of Howell Mountain. Winemakers at Duckhorn aim to treat each vineyard block individually, bringing an artisan's approach to the winery. The winemaker may blend as many as 200 unique distinct lots and use up to 25 types of oak (mostly French) in the final barrel aging. Duckhorn's sister label, Decoy, is a unique blend of Bordeaux varietals that varies from year to year.

Paraduxx was created for the estate's winemakers to express themselves outside of Duckhorn's Bordeaux-style focus. The wine is a Napa Valley red blend consisting primarily of Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. Goldeneye Winery and its sister label, Migration, produce Pinot Noir sourced from cool weather fruit in Mendocino County's Anderson Valley.
