  • Howell Mountain provides a true "outpost" for these wines, with rocky soil, cool breeze, and a stunning view. At an altitude of 2,100 feet above the Napa Valley floor, owners Terry and Juli Pringle grow Zinfandel, Cabernet, Petit Sirah, and Grenache, all organically. The debut vintage was the 1998 100% Znfandel, which garnered a 93-point score from The Wine Spectator. Thomas Brown is the full time winemaker, and Ehren Jordan, winemaker at Turley Wine Cellars, consults. A second project, True Vineyard, debuts in 2008 with a Bordeaux blend estate wine.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.

Petite Sirah is a thick-skinned, unusually dark, tannic, and full-bodied variety most known for giving color and structure to Bordeaux blends. It is a rare grape, with fewer than 10,000 acres planted worldwide, mostly in California. It can withstand very hot climates but it often loses its acidity and fruit when grown in these environments. The best wines display aromas of blackberry jam, blueberry, vanilla, chocolate, and clove. Napa producers Turley, Switchback Ridge, Robert Foley and Pride Mountain produce some of the best wines from Petite Sirah.

Petite Sirah’s full-body and high level of tannins pair best with bold, rich, fatty foods such as barbequed beef, sauced dishes, aged gouda, and mushrooms.
