The massive 2001 Masseto forms with Le Macchiole’s Messorio and Tua Rita’s Redigaffi a trio of world class Merlots in a ten square mile area where the variety virtually did not exist 15 years ago. The volume, richness, and sumptuousness are almost beyond description, as are the length and density of the flow and finish, but there is an underlying vein of purity and freshness which help maintain an impeccable balance. Drink: 2006-2025.

The 2001 Masseto is one of the all-time great wines here. Vertical and soaring in its intensity, the 2001 occupies all dimensions, especially texturally, where it is so rich, so heady and so compelling. Next to other wines, or other vintages, the 2001 just has more of everything. I imagine well-stored bottles will drink well for another 15-20 years. The 2001’s reputation as an iconic wine is clearly justified. This magical vintage was marked by cooling temperatures in September that resulted in a drawn out harvest that took four weeks to complete. Note: The bottle in the Nashville tasting was not perfect, so this note corresponds to a more recent and more representative example. I have seen more bottle variation with the 2001 than other vintages.

The Merlot-dominated wine from this famous estate. Very deep crimson with some evolution at the rim. Extremely opulent nose - the sort of nose I'd like to have seen on the PActrus 1998 in this tasting. Minerals and then dark chocolate sweetness on the end. Slightly furry tannins. This could get a bit tiring to drink in quantity, which is why I don't give it a higher mark, but it is super opulent and many palates other than mine would adore it. Rather Californian.

This is clearly a perfect wine and just now starting to open and show you its sheer beauty. It's balanced with fascinating rosemary and dark fruit character that turns to plums and light chocolate. The undertones on the nose remind me of walking through the Masseto vineyard during a cool summer's morning. It finally softens at the finish and shows a stunning fruit and acid tension. Finally softening and showing it true greatness. Decant four hours before.

Offers a terrific bouquet of ripe, mellowing cherry and berry, accented by leather and incense hints. Shows fine tension between the firm, vibrant structure and ripe fruit, with grace notes of Mediterranean herbs, cigar box and mineral. Velvety and long, with a fabulous, fresh aftertaste. Merlot.—Non-blind Masseto vertical (October 2017). Drink now through 2038. 2,670 cases made, 520 cases imported. — BS

Purchased 1 bottle (5/08) from Suburban Wines in Yorktown Heights, NY; where it was kept in a temperature and humidity controlled vault since importing. The 2001 is considered by most critics to be the greatest vintage ever for this venerable Super-Tuscan wine. Year after year, this wine is selected as a Top 100 Wine (often top 10) by Wine Spectator, and of course did so this year also (in its greatest vintage ever). Comprised of 100% Merlot.. (048900)

This was an exceptional, unique wine. Intense aromatics of tobacco, exotic red fruits and an unmistakeable minerally soil quality that gave this a true sense of terrior. Also hints of coffee/espresso. Very full-bodied and very elegant at the same time. Lots of tannin but not tight or closed; I get the sense that this will always have some tannin. But a 'juicy' mid-palate gave this a freshness that balanced the tannin very well. Very enjoyable now, but I do think this will improve even more with age. A true drinking experience; I would love to try multiple vintages as I think Masseto's unique personality would come through across many vintages...

A premiere estate located in Tuscany's Bolgheri coast, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia produces the renowned Merlot-based blends Masseto, Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove, and Le Volte. The unique microclimate and combination of clay in the soil eventually proved ideal, epitomized by the 2001 Masseto, which garnered 100 points from the Wine Spectator. The pinnacle achievement at Ornellaia, the Masseto has developed a cult following for its limited allocation.

Ornellaia, a Cabernet, Merlot, Cabernet Franc blend which debuted in 1985, is the estate's signature wine. Le Serre Nuove, which requires less aging and displays a more fruit forward style, is something of a "second wine" and joins Le Volte, a Sangiovese, Cabernet, Merlot blend, as wines at a younger age.
