International Wine Cellar | Rating: 95($175; from ungrafted vines that date back at least 120 years-from before phylloxera arrived in Spain-according to importer Jorge Ordonez) Saturated medium ruby. Nose like a first-growth Bordeaux: raspberry, cassis, violet, lead pencil and baking spices. Utterly suave on entry, then extremely fine-grained in the middle palate. A huge but tightly wound wine, with great penetration on the palate and no sense of excess weight. Juicy and wonderfully long, but the wine's fruit flavors are kept under wrap by strong tannins. Like a Pauillac on steroids. The yield here was reportedly about half a ton per acre. This was aged in 200% new oak, including a second pass through new Darnajou barrels. Extraordinary wine. Jancis Robinson | Rating: 18Much more complete nose than the Numanthia 2001. Very seductive and gorgeous. Fine tannins only, and at the very end. Painful, but well managed. Still slightly floral. Disguises alcohol and almost tastes cool. Could drink now.Author: Jancis Robinson
Wine Advocate | Rating: 96Produced from a small 11-acre plot planted on sandy soil, with tiny yields and ungrafted vines planted in the second half of the 19th century, the 2001 Termanthia boasts an inky/ruby/purple color as well as an explosive perfume of blackberries, raspberries, vanilla, smoke, licorice, and coffee. Full-bodied, with great purity, intensity, and a multilayered mouthfeel, this young, primary Spanish red should age beautifully for 10-12 years, at the minimum.Author: Robert Parker
Wine Spectator | Rating: 90This ambitious red shows plenty of extraction, with ripe fruit and toasty oak fighting through gripping tannins. It's exuberant, but needs time to harmonize and show the full range of its flavors. 315 cases made.Author: Thomas Matthews
