($73) Full ruby-red. Deep, smoky, lightly roasted aromas of black plum, minerals and licorice. Full, round and sweet, with highly complex plum, cinnamon and smoky oak flavors perfectly framed by strong but harmonious acidity. Fat, broad and wonderfully deep. Finishes with outstanding palate-saturating persistence and great lingering sweetness. This wine spends nearly two years in large American oak vats, then another 16 months in new French barriques . A bold, mouthfilling red with ripe, generous flavors of plum and black raspberry and notes of coffee, soy and tobacco. The tannins are well-integrated, and lively acidity lifts the flavors. 2,000 cases imported.

The modern-styled, expensive, but terrific 2001 Torre Muga is an unfiltered blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Mazuelo, and 10% Graciano. Aged 22 months in large (18,000 liters) American oak vats, followed by 16 months in new French oak, and bottled without filtration, it offers an opaque ruby/purple color in addition to sweet plum, cedar, tobacco, new saddle leather, Allspice, raspberry, and black cherry fruit aromas as well as flavors. It is a wine of admirable intensity, full body, and superb purity, size, potency, and harmony. Give it another 1-3 years of bottle age and consume it over the following 12-15.

opaque deep purple in hue. Clean bouquet of dried currant, plum and black raspberry. Dry, intense, mouthfilling palate of dark, luscious fruit, tobacco and hints of mint and cocoa. Full bodied with well integrated sweet tannins and long finish. Not sure this has much time if any left but a very enjoyable combination of old world austerity balanced by new world lusciousness accompanied by well integrated secondary characters and tannins. A favorite.

Founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga and his wife Aurora Cano, this winery has enjoyed deserved acclaim for its traditional-style winemaking. The vineyards, situated upon the east and south-facing slopes of the Obarenes Mountains of La Rioja, are the key to the exquisite wines. The multiplier effect of the four grape varieties used - Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano - is readily appreciated upon opening. The wines are wonderful manifestations of the classic grapes of Rioja and range in style from red-fruit elegance to black fruit profundity. The S‹¨«leccion Especial follows more of the former and folds in rich doses of toasty oak, vibrant acidity and spice, while the Torre Muga is a giant of blackberry, black plum, dark chocolate and chewy tannins.
