($37) Dark red. Wild, smoky aromas of cherry, plum, dried flowers, cigar box, cured tobacco, maple and chestnut honey. Deep, supple and sweet, the dark fruit flavors wonderfully complicated by exotic spice and earth notes and supported by gentle, harmonious acidity. The tannins here are ample but polished and lush. Finishes sweet, broad and long, with a lingering cherry quality. (Fine Estates From Spain, Dedham, MA)

Mineral, leather, plum and coffee flavors mingle in this firm, round red. Has a rich texture, with plenty of grip, but no sharp edges. Long, spicy finish. 2,000 cases made.

The outstanding 2001 Muga Reserva Seleccion Especial (70% Tempranillo, 20% Grenache, and 10% Mazuelo and Graciano) was aged 24 months in small French and American oak after having spent 6 months in large foudres. A complex bouquet of cedar, spice box, black cherries, currants, licorice, and vanilla is followed by a full-bodied, opulent, rich red boasting loads of fruit, surprising elegance for a wine of this depth and richness, and impeccable balance. It should drink well for 10-12 years.

  • Founded in 1932 by Isaac Muga and his wife Aurora Cano, this winery has enjoyed deserved acclaim for its traditional-style winemaking. The vineyards, situated upon the east and south-facing slopes of the Obarenes Mountains of La Rioja, are the key to the exquisite wines. The multiplier effect of the four grape varieties used - Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano - is readily appreciated upon opening. The wines are wonderful manifestations of the classic grapes of Rioja and range in style from red-fruit elegance to black fruit profundity. The S‹¨«leccion Especial follows more of the former and folds in rich doses of toasty oak, vibrant acidity and spice, while the Torre Muga is a giant of blackberry, black plum, dark chocolate and chewy tannins.
