2001 Leonetti Merlot Columbia Valley
UNITED STATES / WASHINGTON /
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 90
($55) Bright ruby. Primary aromas of black raspberry, licorice and espresso complemented by sexy oak. Penetrating and intensely flavored, with a tight, sweet kernel of dark fruit flavor. Quite bright and shapely, but really needs another year or so in the bottle to show greater complexity.Author: Stephen TanzerIssue: November/December 2003Wine Spectator | Rating: 92
Bright and generous. A lively mouthful of blackberry, currant and floral aromas and flavors, picking up a fresh-earth quality as the finish lingers. Shows less oak than earlier vintages and gorgeous fruit. 2,478 cases made.Author: Harvey SteimanWine Advocate | Rating: 90
Cedar spices dominate the nose of the 2001 Merlot. A well-structured, medium-bodied wine, it offers loads of blackberry flavors in its broad, lengthy personality. It should be drunk over the next 4 years.Author: Pierre Rovani

Tasted in vertical with '00,'01,'02. Best was '00,'02,01. Chamomile/vanilla nose all, but strongest on '00 & '02. Only '01 seemed to have lightened and fallen off.Drink Dates: 2003-2007Author: Nigel St.Nigel
Gary Figgins, owner-winemaker of this oldest winery in the Walla Walla Valley, turned his winemaking hobby into a career in 1977 after years of amateur experimentation in is cellar. He is respected for being entirely self-educated in winemaking and having an obsessive attention to detail, going so far as to choose specific logs for his barrel staves years in advance. Despite his overwhelming success, total production of his Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, blends, and Riesling remains limited.
