An intriguing blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 19% Cabernet Franc, the opaque plum-colored 2001 Proprietary Red Wine reveals a smoky, earthy nose with lots of black currant, licorice and wood smoke-like scents. Impressively fruity, ripe, full-bodied and supple-textured, this is a lush, heady wine to drink over the next decade or more.

There's a lot to like here, rich and intense, but also marked by drying tannins. The core currant, dark berry, graphite, mocha and vanilla bean flavors gain velocity while retaining depth. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. 2001 California Cabernet blind retrospective (June 2011). Drink now through 2016. 475 cases made.

Full bodied with pure fruit and nice mouth feel. Plenty left in the tank. Lacks the aromatic complexity of the best Bordeaux blends but a very nice wine.

California is the heartland of wine production in the US, and the state that brought prestige to American wine thanks to the pioneers who built early wineries like Staglin, Beringer, Ridge, Mayacamas and Chateau Montelena in the 1800s. Its large geographic area ensures a great diversity in growing sites, varieties grown, and quality levels. Generalizations about the state's wines have numerous exceptions; however, a few key facts generally hold true—ample sunshine, dry weather during the growing season, and moderate winters prevail. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon continue to dominate the state's production—albeit in continually smaller percentages, as growers continue to diversify. More than 100 different varieties can be found throughout the state.
