2001 Glen Eldon Shiraz Dry Bore
AUSTRALIA / SOUTH AUSTRALIA /
International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89
($24; actually from a combination of Eden Valley and Barossa Valley fruit) Red-ruby. Slightly grapey aromas of currant, chocolate, licorice, minerals and herbs. Juicy, slightly candied flavors of dark berries, chocolate and leather. A bit liqueur-like, but not at all thick or over the top. Finishes with firm tannins and a note of black licorice. Combines the lift of Eden Valley fruit and the weight and texture of Barossa, notes importer Ben Hammerschlag. Lovely texture, silky and refined, with layers of ripe plum and blackberry flavors that linger enticingly, picking up a peppery note as they hang around harmoniously.Author: Harvey Steiman
More than half of all Australian wine production takes place in the South Australia region—home to the Shiraz-specializing Barossa Valley as well as revered Riesling zones Clare Valley and Eden Valley. South Australia is too large and diverse to generalize about climate or topography, with both cooler coastal areas and warmer inland sections—but rainfall is generally low throughout and drought is a constant concern.
