($87-$100) Palish cherry-red. Wonderfully perfumed aromas of red fruits, dried rose, flowers and herbs; this smells like a Chambolle from Freddy Mugnier. Wonderfully sweet and juicy, with lovely floral perfume and captivating, high-toned mineral delicacy to the raspberry and red cherry fruit flavors. The very long, youthfully austere finish features firm tannins that avoid coming off as dry. Today the 2004 seems a bit sweeter but more reduced.

The 2001 Barolo Monprivato is striking. It boasts gorgeous textural depth and richness to match its highly expressive, compelling aromatics. The wine has begun to soften a touch. Though not at all forbidding at this stage, the 2001 Monprivato remains an infant with at least two more decades of fine drinking ahead. This is a gorgeous effort from Mauro Mascarello.

Good nose but was palate missing complexity and delineated flavors. Hope it gets better.

For over a century and a half, the Mascarello family has been tending vineyards in the Piedmont region. The "Monprivato" vineyard (located in the village of Castiglione Falletto) is the crown jewel for this estate and enjoys a prime location. It resides on a hillside composed of clayey-silt marl with elements of limestone. The grapes are treated with the utmost attention from the moment they are harvested to the moment they are bottled. "Monprivato" is only created in the best of vintages.
