  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 93

($60) Deep ruby-red. Vibrant aromas of cassis, black cherry, licorice and violet. Juicy, supple and sweet, with an intense cassis and tart red berry fruitiness complicated by cocoa powder, licorice, fresh herbs and tree bark. Bright acids give this highly concentrated, very pure cabernet a lovely light touch. Finishes with firm but suave tannins and excellent length.

It is difficult to find a Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon that can be drunk within ten years of its birth, but the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa is seductive and sexy (generally words that cannot be attributed to a Dunn wine until about age 20). This 2001 exhibits a deep ruby/purple color, lots of loamy soil, crushed rock, spring flower, blueberry and black currant liqueur notes and a lush, pure, medium to full-bodied personality. It can be drunk now as well as over the next 12-15 years.

  • Wine Spectator | Rating: 86

Marked by ripe plum and cherry fruit with a cedary oak edge that turns to tobacco and herbs. Well-balanced, with firm tannins and a hint of wild berry and chocolate on the finish.

Great wine, a bit on the light side, still a pleasure.

Dunn Vineyards is located east of St. Helena in the town of Angwin on Howell Mountain in Napa Valley. In 1972 Randy and Lori purchased the original vineyard property. The winery was established in 1979, with the first harvest of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. In 1981, the first release offered consumers 660 cases of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Howell Mountain vineyards. In 1982, Dunn also released their first Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Currently Dunn Vineyards produces around 5000 cases of extremely age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon.
