($175; interestingly, the only one of these 2001s to be labeled as |shiraz|) Saturated, bright dark ruby to the rim. Superripe, multidimensional nose combines blackberry, blueberry, exotic spices, bitter chocolate and eucalyptus. Superripe, primary and dense, with captivating flavors of crushed raw berries, clove and chocolatey torrefaction. A wine of great spice and verve, finishing extremely long and fresh, with very fine tannins. These 2001s should age gracefully.

A powerhouse, dark and dense, loaded with pepper and licorice flavors running through the solid blackberry, cherry and plum fruit, persisting on the chewy, oaky finish. There's a lot packed in. Needs cellaring. 125 cases imported.

The 2001 Syrah Astralis Vineyard may be just as compelling as the 2002. Tighter because of being in the bottle, it is an extraordinary effort that offers the essence of graphite, blackberry liqueur, espresso, and acacia flowers, all combining into an olfactory smorgasbord for the senses. Sensationally concentrated, with sweet tannin, but neither weighty nor over the top as might be expected for a wine of such extreme richness, it is an extraordinarily well-delineated Syrah that should hit its prime in 10-12 years, and last for 30-40. Hail Caesar ... I mean Roman!

Evolving at glacial pace. Still has youthful fruit and intensity with strong Kirsch flavor on blueberry.

Incredible wine. Lovely nose, big but not over extracted fruit of plums and dark berries, spices, licorice, and pepper on the palate, beautifully integrated and structured tannins and balanced acidity. It was blinded and up against a 2003 Sine Qua Non The Inaugural 'Eleven Confessions' and 2002 Alban Pandora Seymour's Vineyard Edna Valley Syrah and came in a respectable 2nd place behind the SQN!

Owner Roman Bratasiuk shows a devotion to the simple tenets that yield some of the best Shiraz fruit grown in Australia. From the flagship Astralis vineyard, he hand-harvests fruit from over 75-year-old dry-farmed vines and allows the indigenous yeasts to work their magic. The resultant wine is unctuous and viscous, yet harmonized, and expresses those elements which define the essence of great Shiraz - black fruit, bramble, super concentrated cassis and spice, undercurrents of tobacco, coffee and licorice root.

Clarendon Hills also produces wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Semillon.
