($35; this was previously labeled as the Calistoga Cuvee) Bright ruby-red color. Dusty, slightly rustic aromas of dark berries, maraschino cherry, shoe polish, licorice and leather. At once sweet and cool, with notes of cassis, cola, licorice, menthol, rust and damp earth. Rather brooding young cabernet, finishing with slightly tough tannins and medicinal notes of cassis, licorice and mint.

The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (a blend of 86.6% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.7% Merlot, and 4.7% Cabernet Franc) exhibits a dark ruby/purple color as well as tightly knit aromatics consisting of sweet black fruits intermixed with mineral and earth characteristics. Medium-bodied, with softer tannins than its bigger sibling (the Estate Cabernet), it is designed for restaurants seeking a classic Napa Cabernet with immediate appeal, although it is ageworthy.

Excellent wine. Deep blackberry and cherry. Tannins have been well-rounded by aging. Full-bodied with long finish. Consumed with mushroom-stuffed filet, which was a terrific pairing.

"This soars out of the ordinary." -TIME, June 7, 1976 (Judgement of Paris, tasting quote)

This quote embodies the dedication to quality and the consistently elegant, classical style Chateau Montelena has embraced since the early days. The current offerings continue to display adherence to that handcrafted heritage. One of the original "blue-chip" estates of Napa, its illustrious history began in 1882 when Alfred L. Tubbs struck a deal to purchase 254 acres of land at the base of Mount St. Helena, two miles north of Calistoga. "Montelena" is a contracted form of Mount Saint Helena.

The present renaissance of this legendary estate began in 1972 under the leadership of James Barrett. It was thrust into the limelight after the famous Paris Tasting of 1976 when its 1973 Chardonnay walked away from stunned French judges with 1st place in the Chardonnay category. The continuing top-ranking results are testimony to the efforts of James' son Beau, who has maintained the quality performance level since 1982.
