An impressive blend of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, and 5% Merlot, the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill reveals some elevated toasty oak in the nose, but the fruit quality, richness, and overall intensity suggest the wood will be absorbed completely in another 3-4 years. A dense ruby/purple color is followed by an oaky nose revealing scents of blue fruits, black currants, licorice, and spice box. This full-bodied Cabernet possesses sweet fruit, good integration of acidity and tannin, and a long finish. Give it another two years in the bottle, and drink it over the following 12-15.

Rich and extracted but also very dry and tannic; a wine of density that is dominated by very dry tannins. 2001 California Cabernet blind retrospective (June 2011). Drink now. 1,300 cases made.

Our group did a big cab tasting dinner this past week and this was the clear winner among most going up against a Maiden 04, Colgin Tychson Hill 04, Dalla Valle 97, Dominus 90, Montelena 94 and a Leonetti Reserve. This drinks like a grand Bordeaux, still lots of fruit but maturing very nicely and probably could go a lot longer. A real finesse wine ripe with berries, vanilla, subtle oak. They hit this one out of the park.

Founded in 1967, Chappellet is one of the most established family-owned wineries in California. The portfolio of wines is still remarkably focused on what got them where they are today. Estate-grown Chardonnay and Cabernet are still the benchmarks here. Sited on the slopes of Pritchard Hill overlooking Lake Hennessey on the eastern side of Rutherford, neighbors include renowned producers Colgin, David Arthur, Girard, Long and Ovid.
