($135; a blend of 73% cabernet sauvignon and 27% merlot; this will be the last bi-county blend under this label) Good full medium ruby. Captivating aromas of black and red raspberry, violet, bitter chocolate and sexy oak. Supersweet, lush and highly concentrated, with exotic flavors of black raspberry and milk chocolate. Very suave, inviting wine, finishing with very fine tannins, superb length, and a note of espresso. Impressive and utterly seductive.

One of the flagship wines of the late Jess Jackson's Artisans and Estates limited production offerings is the 2001 Cardinale, a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot from some of the finest Jackson-owned vineyards on Mt. Veeder, Keyes on Howell Mountain, Alexander Mountain Estate as well as purchased fruit from the Stagecoach, To-Kalon and Peter Michael vineyards. This sensational, layered, opulent, voluptuous 2001 (the last vintage in which any fruit from Sonoma was used in the final blend) boasts a dense purple color along with a big, rich perfume of kirsch, creme de cassis, subtle toasty oak and incense. Full-bodied, round and generously endowed with an endearing corpulence, this fleshy, full throttle, juicy Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated 2001 can be drunk now or cellared for another 15+ years.

Deeply colored with moderately thick and pigmented legs. A reticent but burgeoning nose of cherry, a bit of funk, and toasty oak. Lots of ripe fruit in the mouth nicely cabined by big and sexy oak shadings. Excellent length. Integrated with good acidity and firm tannin. The potentially excessive tannic structure that concerned me when I reported on this wine from barrel two years ago has been for the most part ameliorated. From bottle this wine still has a firm tannic structure but now shows enough stuffing to deal with its framework. The 2001 is 75% Cabernet and 25% Merlot sourced from Napa Valley (73%) and Sonoma County (27%). The Napa Valley fruit came from Veeder Peak Vineyard on Mount Veeder (28%); To Kalon in Oakville (20%); Keyes Vineyard on Howell Mountain (18%); and Stagecoach Vineyard in Atlas Peak (7%). The Sonoma fruit component was sourced via Peter Michael?s Les Pavots Vineyard in Knights Valley (14%) and the Alexander Mountain Estate in Alexander Valley (13%). All vineyards contribute Cabernet while the Merlot only comes from the Alexander Mountain Estate and Keyes Vineyard. The wine was aged for 21 months in 100% new French oak before being bottled lightly fined and unfiltered. Note that starting with the quite small 2002 vintage (740 cases made), Cardinale shall become a Napa Valley designated wine.

Showing extremely well. Round, plush, sweet tannins surround ripe blackberries, cassis and spice box. Silky smooth and elegant. Even at 14 years old, it's still holding up beautifully. Color was still deep ruby with garnett edge.

Cardinale Estate (currently owned by Kendall-Jackson) is located in Napa Valley's Oakville district. Its signature red is a Cabernet blend made from low-yielding vines situated in the Mayacamas and Vaca mountain ranges. Cardinale sources grapes from Keyes Vineyard on Howell Mountain, Veeder Peak Vineyard, and To Kalon Vineyard in Oakville. The vines are green harvested, after which grapes are hand-sorted and pressed in traditional basket presses. The aging is done in 100% new French barrels. Since 2001 Christopher Carpenter has been the wine maker.
