($56) Bright, deep ruby. Slightly reduced aromas of roasted berries, violet, bacon fat, animal fur and dark chocolate. Concentrated, dense and sweet, with powerful flavors of blackberry, blueberry, dark chocolate and game. Finishes with strong torrefaction notes and excellent length.

A rich, concentrated style that zeros in on a core of spicy blackberry and wild berry fruit. Full-bodied and well-structured, it holds a tight focus and finishes with intensity and depth, with fine-grained tannins keeping the grapey flavors alive. 375 cases made.

The dense opaque purple-colored 2001 Syrah Alder Springs Vineyard Homage to Ed Oliveira is a wine of tremendous intensity as well as a big, smoky, blackberry and blueberry-scented nose with hints of licorice as well as truffles. Dense, opulent, and voluptuous, it is a hedonistic Syrah to enjoy over the next 7-8 years.

Purple black hued wine with lots of thin moderately colored legs. Full and thick nose of sweet anise, black pepper, tomato, dark fruits, and menthol. Quite tannic in the mouth. Finishes very long while tasting primarily of oak. Reminds me somewhat of an Ojai Roll Ranch but with more power and less sophistication. Drink now.

The husband and wife duo of Lisa Drinkward and Les Behrens got their start with their award-winning restaurant, Folie Douce in Arcata, California. When loyal clientele Joe Bob Hitchcock and his wife Lily learned of Les' thoughts of winemaking, the couple decided to put up some capital to join him in his endeavor. The first 175 cases were produced in 1993, and grew to 750 over the next three years. In 1997, the vineyard moved from Arcata to Napa Valley, where Behrens & Hitchcock eventually decided to purchase acreage on Spring Mountain. The team worked hard to produce its first single-vineyard wines during the 1999 harvest. Today the winery is seemingly an overnight success, producing single-lot Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Petite Syrah of outstanding quality.
