($76; from a single vineyard planted in 1945) Good deep ruby. Inky aromas of cassis and bitter chocolate, with a suggestion of baked fruits. Thick, dense and hugely concentrated, with a saline quality. As creamy, unctuous and superripe as this is, it's also lively and sharply delineated. A massive, seamless Rioja that finishes with huge, ripe, touthcoating tannins. Definitely not your father's Rioja.

A powerhouse. It has an inky color, roasted aromas of espresso and tobacco, and intense flavors of bitter chocolate, plum, prune and mineral supported by muscular tannins. Not typical, but has an intense character. 125 cases imported.

Scented. Burgundian. Very dense colour. Nicely savoury. Very sweet, then chewy. This single vineyard wine costs 60 euro rather than the 100 euro for Allende but I prefer it.

The blockbuster 2001 Calvario is a single vineyard Rioja produced from 90% Tempranillo, 8% Grenache, and 2% Graciano, all from vines planted in 1945. Aged in new French oak for 14 months, and bottled unfiltered, it is a sensational effort revealing an inky/purple color along with gorgeously complex aromas of cedar, blackberries, creme de cassis, scorched earth, minerals, and smoky new oak. This full-throttle, seriously endowed effort coats the palate and nearly stains the teeth. Unevolved and rich, but impeccably balanced, even elegant given its total symmetry/harmony, it should hit its prime in 2-4 years, and age gracefully for the following 12-15.

Founded in 1995 (but making wines since 1986) by the brother and sister team of Mercedes and Miguel Angel de Gregorio, this producer hails from Briones in the Rioja Alta region. With a very "poor" terroir of stones and inhospitable soil, this estate crafts wines of great concentration and long maturation potential. Paired with the old vines sourced from 92 different parcels and a state-of-the-art winery, the Angel de Gregorios have the perfect combination of old world raw material and modern winemaking tools.

The Aurus is a cuvee of 85% Tempranillo and 15% Graciano from the oldest vines of the parcels. The Calvario is a single vineyard production that features a majority Tempranillo with small amount of Garnacha and Graciano.
