  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 92

($263) Saturated dark red. Deep, nuanced nose combines dark fruits, minerals and underbrush. Sweet and highly concentrated but tight and backward, even a bit sullen today; fruit and stone flavors are quite primary for the vintage. Finishes with substantial broad tannins and very good grip. May ultimately merit an even higher rating.

Extravagant, very ripe spice aromas explode from the glass with remarkable complexity that frame superbly elegant, gorgeously textured flavors that are intense and vibrant. This is really quite powerful for the vintage and incredibly long yet remains classy and fine. It is not especially big or dense as de Vog‚ Musigny goes but is tautly muscular and defined. Extremely impressive for the vintage.

Light and almost varietal Pinot compared with the run of Roman‚e-St-Vivants I have just been tasting - very charming indeed! Light and delicate but so sweet and delightful. Lovely ripe cherry flavours. Oodles of flattery. What great burgundy is all about!

There is an enthralling sappy richness to the floral and blackberry-scented 2000 Musigny. Supremely elegant, it is not quite as dense as the 2001 yet reveals outstanding depth, purity, and concentration. Lush, stony red and black fruits are interspersed with violets and tangy raspberries in its exceptionally long, expressive, plump character.

Very powerful for a 2000, richer than most vintages of Musigny Vieilles Vignes, very young but drank well after 2 hours being decanted. For some of our guests this was the wine of the night. Stephanie thinks it is way too young.

Comte de Vogue is often considered the greatest wine estate in Chambolle-Musigny. It traces its history back to 1450 and amazingly, after 20 generations, the same family still runs the show. The domaine owns 7.25 hectares of the Le Musigny vineyard; these average 40 years old and are labeled Vieilles Vignes. The property also includes smaller holdings of Bonnes-Mares and Premier Cru Chambolle-Musigny. The blending of tradition and modernity in winemaking has resulted in wines that are revered by critics and wine lovers around the world.
