  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

($85; just the second vintage for this bottling) Good medium red. Highly aromatic, complex nose combines cherry, raspberry, leather and game, along with a deep woodsiness. Plush and deep, with nuanced flavors of red fruits, leather, mocha, camphor and marzipan nicely framed by sound acidity. Very showy Barolo with impressive complexity of flavor on the ripely tannic, expanding aftertaste.

The 2000 Barolo Ravera appears a bit less ripe than the Brunate with its herb-laced nose and slightly hard, if forceful flavors. There is some margin for future improvement, but the sweetness of fruit and plush texture of the other wines in the line are not here.

This is a supermodel of a wine. Precise with everything in perfect proportion. Blackberries, minerals and cedar. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a supersilky finish. Everything is in the right place. 550 cases made.

  • Decades of experience as vineyard tenders in Barolo provided the Vietti family with priceless information when they decided to go into the winemaking business in the early 1900s. The firm recently acquired an additional 7 hectares of vineyards, bringing their holdings to a total of 31. Their link to the land has been the catalyst for their vineyard-designate bottlings, which showcase Barolo's diverse terroir. The wines' finesse belies their extraordinary depth and complexity; Vietti firmly adheres to the classic style that makes the wines of Piedmont such a revelation to those patient enough to cellar them.

Piedmont, which literally means “foot of the mountain,” produces some of Italy's finest red wines. Its clay, limestone, and sand soils are home to the legendary Barolo and Barbaresco wines, made from the extremely age-worthy Nebbiolo variety. Dolcetto and Barbera are considered to be more “workhorse” varieties, and produce the largest quantity of wine. The region is tucked in the cool northwest corner of the country, surrounded on three sides by the Alps. Fog often blankets the region, ensuring long, cool growing seasons.
