The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve (15.5% alcohol; 100% Grenache) is a wine of magnificent intensity as well as majestic texture and richness. Layers of concentrated fruit cascade over the palate. Opaque purple-colored and extremely full-bodied, with a gorgeous nose of minerals, white flowers, black fruits, pepper, and garrigue, this sumptuous, seamless 2000 Chateauneuf must be tasted to be believed. I have had this wine a half dozen times in blind tastings that included some of the finest 2000 Chateauneuf du Papes, and it consistently ranks as one of the top 2 or 3 wines in the tastings. Then again, I'm looking at its overall potential as it is not the most forward or evolved of the 2000 Chateauneuf du Papes. It is a magnificent tour de force in winemaking. Kudos to winemaker/proprietor Jean-Paul Dauman for this masterpiece!

Very extracted, pitch-black, modern style. Oak, kirsch and spirits aromas, with a cassis and wild raspberry syrup character. Tough tannins. Angular finish. A bit overdone. 250 cases made.

Located in the northern part of Chateauneuf du Pape and owned by the Daumen family since 1905, the domaine began bottling a small percentage of wine under its own label in the 1960s. Current owner Jean Paul Daumen's father, Maxime, built new cellars and installed foudres to accommodate the expanding production. The domaine's vines cover approximately 30 hectares and average 60 years of age.
Yields are kept low and all grapes are de-stemmed prior to fermentation. 80% of the production is done in old oak foudres with the remainder in neutral barrels. Biodynamic principles are used in both the vineyards and cellar, and no SO2 is used during the vinification process.
