  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 91

($220) Medium red. Redcurrant liqueur, smoke and nutty oak on the superripe nose, with an intriguing iron-like element. Very sweet and suave in the mouth, conveying a more layered impression than La Serra. Flavors of red fruits, minerals and flowers seem more clearly delineated. Finishes with big but ripe tannins and very good length.

Freshly cut roses on the nose. Extraordinary. Hints of ripe, red fruits. Full-bodied, with a wonderful balance of tannins and ripe fruit. Long and caressing. Subtle and refined, yet builds on the palate. A wine with great raciness. From Voerzio's 2.5 acres in the Brunate vineyard near La Morra.

Voerzio's 2000 Barolo Brunate is a fabulous, explosive wine. Still impossibly young and vigorous, it shows remarkable intensity and power. Sweet, balsamic notes develop in the glass, lending further notes of darkness and seductiveness. This is a beautiful, centered Brunate that is sure to provide fabulous drinking for another two decades. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030.

  • For years considered an oddity in Piedmont, Roberto Voerzio has proven to the naysayers and detractors that his techniques, a consummate melding of old and new elevage methods, do work and produce wines of unquestionable concentration and harmonious balance. He is almost fanatical in his insistence upon extraordinarily low yields; high density plantings and 2-4 clusters of grapes per vine are the norm. The cellar regimen is tailored to each vineyard's production, not over-regulating fermentations and employing a precise melange of new and used oak to achieve the overall "perfect" package. The wines are deceptive in that they are luscious and approachable, replete with ripe fruit and floral notes, but a hidden spine of structure and massive underlying tannins create an absolutely stunning Nebbiolo experience. These are rare wines that consistently rank among the best the Piedmont offers, and Voerzio is a true Nebbiolo legend.
