  • International Wine Cellar | Rating: 89

($29; a blend of 75% grenache, 10% mourvedre, 10% cinsault and 5% syrah) Bright, medium-deep red. Raspberry, smoke and truffle on the nose. Supple and expressive; not hugely fleshy or concentrated but offers enticing fruit, harmonious acidity and a complicating mineral component. Tannins are quite fine.

Complex, but not very deep or hard to understand. Delicious, with leather, game, plum and black fruit. Medium- to full-bodied, with supple enough tannins to drink nicely on release. Should be a great match with Peking duck.

The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape (a blend of 75% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre, 10% Cinsault, and 5% Syrah) was aged in foudre for 15-18 months, and totally destemmed. It offers a deep ruby/purple color in addition to aromas of black currants, cherries, dried Provencal herbs, and licorice. Layered, sweet, accessible, and plump, this succulent effort was produced from the estate's younger vines (25-30 years).

Pierre Usseglio et Fils has been a family-run domaine since Francis Usseglio released his first vintage in 1949. Today, with brothers Jean-Pierre and Thierry Usseglio at the helm, Pierre and Fils has become one of the top producers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

The vineyards comprise 17 parcels over 23 hectares on some of the best terroir in Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The wine is vinified traditionally using natural yeasts, low doses of sulfur, and is aged mostly in old oak foudres. The results are world class wines that are testament to Chateauneuf-du-Pape as one of the world's most famous terroirs.
