($115) Dark red with an amber edge. Open nose offers aromas of currant, plum, smoked meat, roast coffee and game. Then plummy and spicy in the mouth, with distinctly Bordeaux-like notes of tobacco leaf, licorice and fresh herbs. Stylish but rather slight, with a restrained sweetness, and a bit streaky with acidity. Finishes with dusty tannins. I'd drink this library release soon. For his part, Togni describes the wine as St. Julien-like, |whereas it's usually more in the Pauillac style.|

The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon is performing well. There are 1,600 cases of this medium-bodied, Bordeaux-like effort. Notes of cedar, spice box, black currants, subtle oak, and a hint of saddle leather emerge from a pretty, rich, concentrated Cabernet. It is an exceptionally successful effort for the vintage.

Awesome and from a bad vintage.

I sincerely hope this was a bad bottle. Medium dark black red color with a few medium thick clear legs. Very reticent light aromas of cassis and earth. Tannic and rather stern with some plum and high acidity. There is nothing going on in this wine. Perhaps in ten years this wine might break the 80-point barrier.

This family-owned and run vineyard, founded in 1981, sits near the top of Napa Valley's Spring Mountain. Formerly a producer of Cabernet and Sauvignon Blanc, Togni Vineyards is now concentrated on its estate Margaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. This age-worthy blend reflects Togni's early wine education and influence as a student of Emile Peynaud at the University of Bordeaux. With an annual production of only 2,000 cases, Togni wines are in limited supply and high demand. The estate grown and bottled Cabernet Sauvignon is a juicy combination of black cherry, currant, cassis, and licorice. In addition to the current release each vintage, Togni re-releases a 10-year-old bottling to showcase his wine's true aging potential. A second label, Tanbark Hill, is produced from younger vines on the estate property. Rounding out the portfolio, Togni also makes a sweet red known as Ca'Togni produced from Black Muscat.
