($45) Medium red. Cooler aromas of cherry, licorice and menthol. More tightly wound and subdued than the Champans, with more density and underlying structure. Not as immediately accessible, but subtler and more intensely flavored.

Aromatically demure, the black cherry-scented 2000 Volnay Taillepieds has a magnificent personality. Broad, sexy, expressive, and deep, it coats the taster's palate with loads of plump, sensual red cherries and blackberries. It has a satin-textured, gorgeous mouth-feel, a flamboyant personality, and lovely breadth as well as length. It lacks the complexity of the Marquis d'Angerville's finest wines yet delivers tons of supple fruit.

Very, very deep crimson. Savoury, chewy with a suggestion of cherries. Very hard work at the moment. Grainy tannins. (CS)

Very fresh, pure and classic Volnay aromas that lead to frank, round and pretty flavors underpinned by more prominent tannic structure than the Champans. This is an elegant wine with a good sense of minerality and a long, persistent, beautifully complex finish.
