($70) Deep red-ruby. Highly spicy aromas of cherry and raspberry, with a hint of wasabi. Sweet, chewy flavors of black and red fruits, smoke, earth, minerals, cinnamon and mace, complicated by caramel, roasted nuts and toast from the 100% new barrels. Finishes extremely subtle and long, with suave, even tannins and compelling sweetness. The new oak component is seamlessly integrated. A superb showing for this pinot.

The deep saturated ruby/purple-colored 2000 Pinot Noir Kistler Vineyard offers a beautiful perfume of violets, minerals, sweet black cherry and raspberry fruit, toasty wood, and earth. It is a Comte de Vogue Musigny-like effort without the copious tannin. This long, rich, nicely-textured, and pure offering will be its finest between 2005-2016. Steve Kistler and his sidekick, Mark Bixler, feel that the key to making top quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in 2000 (an extremely cold year with higher acids) was patience. Some years the flavors come early, and in other years they are much later.

I feel I should like the recent vintages of Kistler Pinots more than I do. Medium purple slightly colored wine with aromas of freshly cut green wood, nail polish, brown sugar, rose, spice, plum, cinnamon, green apple, and malt. Lots of sweet fruit on the palate with moderate though significant tannins and more than adequate acidity. Thick flavors of pineapple, plum, spice, and wood. Pinot as Zinfandel, but I like it. Smooth and seductive texture ? the bottle disappears very fast.

Kistler Vineyards is a small family-owned winery located in the Russian River Valley specializing in Burgundian style Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Since its first vintage in 1979, the winery has grown in size to produce 25,000 cases per year. Steve Kistler and Mark Bixler share the winemaking responsibilities, while Mark also acts as chemist and business manager. The winery, completed in 1992, is located on their Vine Hill Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. Kistler's fruit is sourced from various vineyards across Napa and Sonoma counties. Kistler Vineyards' wines are released semi-annually and almost exclusively to its mailing list.
