    ($319-$395) Full red-ruby. Roasted plum, currant, tobacco and minerals on the nose. Compellingly dense and thick but almost miraculously lively and light on its feet. Has a texture like liquid velvet, coating the entire palate. Wonderfully unmanipulated wine, with perfectly integrated acids giving it superb subtle vinosity and thrust. Finishes with outstanding building persistence, with the substantial tannins perfectly supported by the wine's fat middle.

    Tasted from an ex-chateau bottle in Bordeaux, I was not surprised to find the 2000 Chateau Haut-Brion flirting with perfection. The nose is simply breathtaking - quintessential Haut-Brion with ebullient red berry fruit, roasted herbs, gravel, terracotta tiles on a warm summer's day...it is simply wave after wave of intoxicating scents that could bring even the most stoic person to tears of joy. The palate displays heavenly balance, pitch-perfect acidity, perhaps spicier than previous bottles that I have tasted, and what depth and dimension in this outstanding wine. That hint of graphite on the finish is a cheeky nod to Pauillac, as if to thumb its nose at the First Growths, because alongside Chateau Latour, almost by stealth, the Haut-Brion is one of the greatest Bordeaux in this millennial year.     This 2000 starts with aromas of citrus fruit, currants, flowers, and fresh mushrooms. The palates leads off full and rich, with round tannins and a dusty texture. Plenty of fruit and sliced mushrooms on the palate, but it is still tight. Pull the cork after 2010.

    This is well-endowed with a large core of fig, blackberry and black currant fruit that has light mulling spice, bay and tobacco nuances peeking out, while the tarry finish cuts a broad and deep swath. Obvious heft, but the elegance wins out in the end, with a lilting sandalwood and sweet tobacco-infused finish that just sails on and on -- 2000 Bordeaux blind retrospective (December 2015). Best from 2018 through 2038. 11,817 cases made.

Since its founding in 1525, Chateau Haut-Brion has passed between many illustrious owners, including admirals, archbishops, and mayors of Bordeaux. In recent years, the estate has come under the ownership of Clarence Douglas Dillon, Ambassador of the United States in Paris and Minister of Finance under President John F. Kennedy, making it the only American-owned First Growth property. Currently, Dillon's granddaughter, the Duchesse de Mouchy, oversees Haut-Brion, among many others, under the public limited company of "Domaine Clarence Dillon."

Chateau Haut-Brion is also the only First Growth property from the 1855 Classification that lies outside of the Medoc and Sauternes. Located in Pessac, within the Graves region, just one mile from the city of Bordeaux, the wine of Chateau Haut-Brion is highly sought-after, landing it among the most expensive and prestigious wines in France. The estate vineyards, dominated by gravel and clay, are planted to both red and white varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc; and Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. Haut-Brion is characterized by earthy scents, ripe fruit, tobacco and mineral, revealing aromas of chocolate and smoke and creating an elegant and harmonious wine that is highly structured, allowing it to age seamlessly.

Located in the southwest of France, Bordeaux is the single largest fine-wine-producing region in the world, with more than 15,000 growers spread over 57 appellations and more than 700 million bottles produced annually. The region boasts a two-thousand-year winemaking history and some of the wine world's most recognized and highly sought-after names. Red Bordeaux blends comprise eighty percent of production, but dry and sweet whites are also well-known. The region is divided into the Left and Right Banks (of the Dordogne River); Cabernet Sauvignon prevails in the former and Merlot in the latter.
